Losing Steam - Figuratively and Literally

Cooking on a mass scale requires no small amount of precise engineering.

A corn tortilla manufacturer was having a problem controlling temperature with the saturated steam used to heat the cooking kettles for the corn. The manufacturer came to Proportion-Air seeking a solution.

NEW VALVE PROVIDES ULTIMATE IN FREEZE PROTECTION

 CUSTOMER CHALLENGE

Various systems on a passenger train require a water supply, from the buffet car to the carriage toilets. When a train is not in service (overnight), water left in the system can freeze, either damaging the system or preventing the train from being started. Components have been developed over the years to automatically drain the water when the train is out of service, if the temperature falls towards zero. Many of these systems are unreliable.

Custom Valve Assembly for Ultrasonic Welding by Humphrey Products

Engineering Solution - This post is brought to you by Humphrey Products.

Ultrasonic welding is a method of joining two nonferrous metal pieces using high frequency acoustic vibrations to create a strong metallurgical bond without heat, solder or flux.

The high power vibrations are transmitted through a specially designed velocity transformer called a “horn” to the clamped workpiece. The vibrations disrupt the oxide layer at the mating surface causing the metal atoms to diffuse from one piece to the other. This creates a cross-linking that produces a true bond.

What is a Balanced Valve & What Are the Benefits?

Posted by Kelly Howe

This post brought to you by Humphrey Products.

What is a balanced valve and what are the benefits of this type of design?

A balanced valve design means that the internal forces from pressure are equal. The forces from air pressure that open the valves are equal to the forces from air pressure that close the valves. In engineering school, engineers are taught to draw a “free body diagram” of the part in question and then apply all forces to that “free body.” With this type valve design, the forces from the pressure will be equal in both directions.
